Swimming With Goliath Grouper

What’s speckled, swallows its prey whole, and feels like a bus on the end of a fishing line? You might be thinking this is an opening scene to the latest underwater horror movie, but we’re actually talking about the one and only Goliath Grouper! They are by far our captains’ favorite fish to fight and here’s why.

This massive species is the largest in the western hemisphere, with the ability to reach lengths of up to 8 feet and weighing in around 800 pounds! It truly feels like you’ve hooked up to a bus when you’re trying to reel them in. When you first hook onto one, they head straight for their rocky home in the nearby reefs. They have a lot more bulk and pound-for-pound strength than most groupers and that initial run is where a lot of anglers lose them. However, they do not have a lot of stamina and will tire quickly, so once you’ve gotten them to the surface, you have officially won.

Despite having teeth, the Goliath Grouper typically engulfs and swallows their prey whole. They are opportunistic predators and feed mostly on slow-moving fish, crabs, and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. They are known to take advantage of an easy snack, so dangling an enticing reef fish near the ocean floor will usually catch their attention.

One of the most thrilling parts of reeling in a Goliath Grouper is the fact that you legally cannot bring the fish onto your boat once caught. While this might seem like a negative thing, it makes for absolutely incredible pictures of you in the water with one of these beasts! Check out the following video of some of Captain Brophy's clients experiencing this thrill.
